When Two Become One

Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

─ Genesis 2:24

When a couple gets married, the two become one. We make a commitment before God and man to build our relationship within the context of our family that God has given us. God instructs us to leave, to depart from our family, to leave parents behind and cleave to one another. We become attached and forever hold fast to our spouse.

The dynamic of leaving and cleaving is a spiritual cleaving; it’s an emotional cleaving, and it’s a physical cleaving that God ordained. It’s not about location; it’s a matter of the heart. We can be a thousand miles away from our family and still not leave and cleave. God ordained for two to become one. When we refuse to leave and cleave, the relationship grows weak.

For any of us who are in-laws, it’s a hard thing to do sometimes. The greatest gift we can give to our family is to help them be successful in the relationship that they’ve chosen to be a part of.

It’s our role as in-laws to support and pray for our children, brothers and sisters to be successful in their marriages. We have to be intentional in supporting the marriages they’re building.

Today’s One Thing

If you’re married, come into agreement with one another today in prayer to leave and cleave. If you’re an in-law, ask the Lord what changes you can make to better support the married couple in your life.
