Your Gift – God’s Rest

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

─ Matthew 11:28-29

Jodi finished putting the last of the dinner dishes into the dishwasher as her daughter, Jessica, came into the house. “Hungry?” Jodi asked, setting a plate she’d kept warm onto the table.

“Nearly starved,” Jessica replied playfully. “What’s that?” Jessica asked with her mouth full, nodding toward an unopened gift on the kitchen counter.

“It’s a gift Aunt Debbie sent you. It’s been there for a few weeks. I waited to see how long it took for you to notice it,” Jodi replied. Her mother’s words hung in the air. Jessica had been self-absorbed, trying to repair a broken relationship with a close friend.

Daily we can push the panic button in fear of what’s coming any time life throws a curve ball.

Jesus simply asks, “Are you tired of trying to clean up life’s messes on your own?” (Matthew 11:28). He invites us to let go of life’s heaviness and discover His promised rest.

We can choose to receive this gift from Jesus or continue to take on the trouble from the world. If you choose to trust Him and rest, whatever the enemy throws at you, He is able to handle it.

Today’s One Thing

This week, every time thoughts of the problem you’re facing come to your mind, read Matthew 11:28 three to five times and then thank Jesus for your gift of rest as you trust Him.
