Acting in Faith: Understanding Child Sexual Abuse, Prevention, & Effective Reponse to Suspected Abuse

11/08/2012 @ 8:30 AM - 12:00 PM UTC-7

Yes

Kids-TALK Children’s Advocacy Center, a program of The Guidance Center, in partnership with the Interfaith Health and Hope Coalition (IHHC) have collaborated to develop a teach-in, or train-the-trainers, for faith leaders and staff of faith-based organizations who work with children (e.g. Sunday/ Bible/ Nursery School Teachers, Parish/ Faith Community Nurses, Stevens Ministers, Childcare Providers, etc.) to address child sexual abuse and mandated reporting. The teach-in will be conducted in two, half-day sessions (8:30am-12:00pm) on November 8, 2012 and on a date in the first quarter of 2013. Both sessions are free, but pre-registration is required. The first session, held at Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit, includes curriculum from the Darkness to Light Stewards of Children Training and a panel discussion featuring a faith leader, a Children’s Protective Service Manager, and Kids-TALK trauma therapist, pediatrician, among other experts in the field. Participants will gain the ability to recognize the signs of child abuse and neglect, to empathetically respond if a child discloses abuse allegations, to identify and use available resources, and to understand the referral protocols, including mandated reporting.
All interested members of faith organizations should contact Lacea Zavala, Kids-TALK CAC Community Outreach Coordinator at 734.785.7705 x 7291 or Lzavala@iamtgc.net to register and to receive pertinent information for your participation.
