Ken Medema is a widely known, much loved musician and songwriter. His lyrics address theological, sociological and social justice concerns that he has been involved with for all of his career. Ken’s music encompasses styles from his classical roots, to jazz, contemporary, and everything in between. His concerts include audience participation by the telling of stories on a selected theme for the occasion. Ken then improvises of the spot, composing and performing songs based on the story he just heard, creating a totally unique and personal concert experience. The theme for our CommUNITY Concert is “A Time When a Stranger Became a Friend.”
“Though blind from birth, Medema has demonstrated his extraordinary musical vision in every imaginable venue, custom-designing his program for each occasion. Medema hears with his heart stories from people or themes from events or speeches, then sings the stories back to his audience.” (Jim Bishop, Park View Mennonite Church).
Ken was born in Grand Rapids, MI. Music became an integral part of his life as he started playing piano at the age of five. After graduating from high school, Ken attended Michigan State University where he studied music therapy obtaining his bachelor and masters degrees. He worked in the field of music therapy until 1973 when he left his work as a therapist and began his career as a performer and recording artist. Ken is active over 200 days a year, has recorded over 40 albums, and last year was featured at Carnegie Hall with a choir, orchestra, and soloist performing his piece entitled “The Weaver.” Find more information about Ken at www.Kenmedema.com and on FaceBook @ Ken Medema / musician.
