National Bullying Prevention Month Workshops

10/25/2021 @ 5:45 PM - 7:00 PM

A Beautiful Me, an area non-profit focused on providing guidance and mentorship and fostering self-esteem for females of all ages, is offering free anti-cyber bullying workshops for girls 6th through 12th grade and their parents. The events will take place Monday October 25 and repeated on Thursday October 28th from 5:45-7:00 p.m. at the Macomb MSU Extension Center.
The sessions are being held in conjunction with Macomb County Community Health and address a growing problem portrayed in the new Mark Wahlberg movie, “Joe Bell,” which tells the true tragic tale of the bullying of Bell’s high school student son.

As social media continues to pervade our lives and the lives of our children, cyber bullying and cyber harassment are on the rise. Consider these alarming statistics:

· 59% of U.S. teens have been bullied or harassed online*

· 31% of girls have been bullied or made fun of on social media**

· 61% of girls say their parents never monitor their social media use**

· Suicide rates among youth ages 10-19 rose by 56% between 2007-2016***

**Ruling Our eXperiences, Inc. (2017)

***Center for Disease Control (2018)

The interactive workshops will utilize music and storytelling, examining dynamics related to this form of bullying while offering preventive tools and tips and coping mechanisms designed to instill life skills and confidence.

“While cyber bulling and harassment are less physical than traditional forms of bullying they can have more devastating and longer-lasting effects,” said Karen Palka, executive director, A Beautiful Me. “It is vital for kids and parents to communicate with each other, put such events into proper perspective, and provide caring guidance and support.”
