Experiencing God through Storytelling

Brandon Lake’s Why on Storytelling

Worship songs can have a profound way of connecting us to God, and for Brandon Lake, GRAMMY® Award-winning artist and songwriter, storytelling is one of his key elements of creating powerful worship music. When you hear one of his songs, you might feel like he’s sharing a piece of his own heart, while also making space for you to find your own story in the music.

Brandon talked to us about why storytelling is such an essential part of his songwriting and how personal testimonies can bring people closer to God.

“Storytelling is the most powerful medium,” he explained, pointing to the Bible as a prime example. “Our faith is founded on a story…. We have this Bible that is a giant telling of a story, and it’s what we refer back to; it’s what we stand upon.”

When you think about it, every chapter of Scripture tells a story about God’s love, redemption, and faithfulness. And Brandon believes that worship songs should reflect that same storytelling power. Through his music, he invites listeners to engage with God in a more personal way, by telling stories that mirror both his own journey and the shared experiences of believers everywhere.

Sharing Personal Testimonies through Song

Brandon’s songwriting is deeply personal, and that’s what makes it so relatable. He doesn’t shy away from sharing his own testimony, and in doing so, he creates space for you to find your story in his songs. “In a song I have called ‘Talking to Jesus,’ I share a lot about my story,” he says. “You may not have the same story, but somehow people, as they’ve heard that song, can find themselves in that story.”

Testimony has the power to overcome.

That’s the beauty of worship music—while every listener’s experience is different, the heart of the message can resonate universally. By opening up about his own relationship with God, his struggles, and his victories, Brandon invites you to do the same.

Overcoming through Testimony

One of the reasons storytelling is so powerful in worship is because it’s tied to testimony—and testimony has the power to overcome. As Brandon puts it, “We overcome by the blood of the lamb and the word of our testimony.” He believes that sharing what God has done in your life is a vitally important part of living out your faith and helping others do the same.

When you hear a testimony, whether in a song or spoken word, it can remind you that you’re not alone in your struggles. Brandon shares, “For me to share my testimony, I’ve got to tell you a story. And that’s how we overcome—by telling stories.” Worship songs that include personal testimonies help you reflect on your own walk with God and see how His grace has been at work in your life, too.

Your story matters, too.

Finding Yourself in the Story

Even though the specifics of his journey might be different from yours, Brandon’s openness makes room for you to connect with the song on a personal level. “I don’t even fully understand it,” he admits. “It’s just something that pulls on your heartstrings like nothing else.”

Whether he’s singing about talking to Jesus, moments of gratitude, or God’s faithfulness, Brandon’s lyrics remind you that your story matters, too. When you listen to his music, you might feel like his words are speaking directly to you, giving voice to your own emotions and experiences.

Brandon’s approach to worship makes space for real, raw stories—because that’s how we connect with God and with each other. “I think that’s the power of doing that in a song,” he says. “Somehow, people can find themselves in that story.” And that’s exactly what makes his music so impactful.

When you listen to a song that tells a story—whether it’s Brandon’s story or one that resonates with your own experience—it reminds you that God is actively working in your life. It’s a reminder that you’re part of a larger narrative, one that stretches back through Scripture and continues in your own testimony today.

Brandon’s commitment to storytelling in worship serves as an invitation for you to engage with God on a deeper level. His songs, full of personal testimony and heartfelt praise, remind us all that our stories matter. And in sharing them—whether through music or in daily life—we find the strength to overcome, one story at a time.
