Joseph O’Brien on Making Worship Personal and True

Contemporary Christian artist Joseph O’Brien shared his heart for connecting with younger generations through his music in a conversation with Family Life Radio. As church attendance declines among youth but interest in spirituality rises, Joseph strives to bridge the gap by creating music that resonates deeply and authentically.

Joseph’s approach is both conversational and grounded in truth, offering a fresh perspective on faith that is both relatable and inspiring. He aims to create music that speaks to the spiritual hunger of today’s youth and addresses the underlying need for deeper, more meaningful connections.

Christian Community and a Sense of Belonging

Recent studies from Barna highlight a concerning trend: while church attendance among younger generations is down, their interest in spirituality and connection with God is increasing. This paradox presents both a challenge and an opportunity for Christian leaders and artists like Joseph O’Brien. He acknowledges this shift, emphasizing the importance of Christian community in nurturing faith and fostering a sense of belonging.

“Our generation longs for relationships. It’s hard because I’m a big advocate for the local [church] body and being able to talk to people about that is just as important. Just like Scripture says—do not neglect meeting together. There’s an importance of Christian community, but I think our generation, they just want something deeper.”

Joseph believes that young people are searching for something deeper than surface-level religion, craving authentic, experiential faith encounters that go beyond traditional church settings. It’s about experiencing God in a way that feels real and personal.

Today, digital interactions often replace face-to-face connections, and the church must adapt to meet the needs of a generation that values authenticity and depth. Joseph’s music aims to fill this gap by creating spaces where young people can encounter God in a profound and personal way, whether through a worship service, a concert, or even listening to a song in their room.

The Need for Deeper Connections

While emotional worship experiences can be powerful, Joseph stresses the importance of grounding these experiences in biblical truth. “The thing that you need to know about music and worship is that it’s foundationally about truth, and truth moving you in your heart.”

Balance between emotion and truth is crucial for a healthy and sustainable faith journey.

Joseph points out that while emotional worship can be uplifting, it should not be the sole basis of one’s spiritual life. Instead, worship should be rooted in the truth of God’s Word, allowing these truths to transform our hearts and minds.

And truth is particularly important in a culture that often values feelings over facts. Joseph’s music seeks to remind his listeners that while emotions are a valid part of the worship experience, they should always be anchored in the unchanging truth of Scripture. By doing so, worship becomes a transformative encounter with the living God.

Authentic, heartfelt worship can bring us closer to God and to each other.

Joseph’s Role as a Young Artist

As a young artist himself, Joseph understands the unique challenges and pressures faced by his generation. He shares his own experiences of navigating faith during high school, often feeling isolated in his commitment to living out his beliefs. “I just know what it’s like to be in high school, and, I think even though I went to a Christian school to be a faithful Christian …I wasn’t always accepted for that. Sometimes I was made fun of because of it.”

Joseph O Brien

His mission is to support and uplift young Christians, fostering a sense of community and belonging. Joseph’s music serves as a beacon of light, guiding his listeners towards a deeper, more authentic relationship with God. Through his songs, he aims to create a space where young people can feel seen, heard, and valued, knowing that their struggles and triumphs are shared by others.

“I just want to be that person who’s encouraging others, being like, ‘Hey, you’re not alone in this fight, and you’re not isolated in that it’s just you and God.’ There are other kids and other people our age out there who are just yearning to please God with their actions and wanting to walk with Jesus.”

Joseph continues, “I think my music hopefully is a way for them to experience that reassurance that they have other people in the fight with them.”

Creating Relatable and Conversational Music

Joseph wants to make his listeners feel seen and understood, taking them on a journey of faith that feels personal and direct. By adopting a conversational tone in his music, Joseph breaks down barriers and creates an intimate connection with his audience. His songs speak directly to the listener, addressing their doubts, fears, and hopes in a way that feels personal and relevant. His music is accessible and relatable, allowing his listeners to engage with their faith on a deeper level.

As you listen to Joseph’s music, may you be inspired to pursue a faith that is both emotionally rich and firmly grounded in the truth of God’s Word.
