How a Mission Trip Transformed Terrian’s Faith
Finding God in Unexpected Places
Christian artist Terrian Bass talked with us about the struggles she faced as a young believer, and a life-changing mission trip to Spain.
Reflecting on her early years, Terrian shared the confusion she felt about foundational aspects of Christianity. “I just had questions that I felt like I just couldn’t find answers for,” she explained.
Unanswered questions left her feeling distant from God, a sentiment many young believers can relate to. Growing up in church, she often wondered about the different names for God and the concept of the Trinity. “I remember as a kid asking, like, are there like three of them? But like knowing now three in one.”
Teenage Temptations and Balancing Faith
Balancing her actions with her faith was particularly challenging for Terrian, especially as a preacher’s daughter.
She felt a constant pull between wanting to live freely and maintaining her love for God.
Like many teenagers, Terrian faced numerous temptations and pressures from her peers. She described the typical struggles of adolescence, including the desire to fit in and make mistakes. “And then you’re just being a teenager and all the things that come with being a teenager, the temptations, the boys, and just want to go be crazy with your friends and all of that.”
A Transformative Experience
A turning point in Terrian’s faith journey came during a mission trip to Spain. “I did not want to leave that place,” she recalled. The trip exposed her to a community of believers who were passionately focused on Jesus, without the distractions often found in American culture.
“It was just being around different believers from different countries. I feel like in America, we have so many options, where it felt like they didn’t really have as many options as we did. It was just Jesus,” Terrian shared. This experience deeply impacted her, showing her a level of dedication and joy that she wanted to bring back to her own life.
The believers in Spain had a profound influence on Terrian and her companions. “We believe the Holy Spirit is powerful and we believe in this gospel message, and we’re going to like, go wherever we need to go preach it…” she recounted. Their unwavering focus on the gospel message inspired Terrian to strive for a similar commitment in her own faith.
The contrast between the single-minded devotion she witnessed in Spain and the distractions she sees in American culture was striking. “We just felt like, man, we get so easily distracted over here, you know? But the joy that they had, we were like, we need to take some of that with us…” It’s also driven her to seek a deeper, more focused relationship with God.
We hope Terrian’s story encourages you to seek deeper understanding and commitment in your own faith journey, knowing that God’s presence can be found even in the midst of your struggles.
