How Brandon Lake Finds God in Silence
The Power of Quiet Worship
For many of us, worship happens in church on Sundays or through music blasting from our car speakers. But for worship leader GRAMMY® Award-winning artist and songwriter Brandon Lake, some of his most profound moments with God happen in silence and solitude.
While leading worship on stage may seem like the peak of spiritual connection, Brandon believes that the quiet moments, away from the noise and crowds, are where you can truly encounter God. Brandon talked to us about his personal worship practices and how they often revolve around finding God in the stillness, whether it’s during a drive or out in nature.
As a songwriter constantly surrounded by music, Brandon finds that his deepest connection with God often happens in moments of complete silence. “My driving time is probably my most holy time,” Brandon shared.
Worship happens when you create space for God to speak.
When you think about worship, you might picture raising your hands in a packed church or singing along with a worship band. But in Brandon’s experience, worship doesn’t always require music or noise.
He describes how, in his car, with no distractions, he is able to simply sit with God. “Because I’m always surrounded by music… a lot of times, I sit in silence and I just listen, and I’ll pray,” he explained.
It’s in these quiet, uninterrupted moments that Brandon says he often hears from God most clearly. You don’t need a specific setting or a formal worship routine. Sometimes, the best worship happens when you simply create space for God to speak into your life.
For Brandon, solitude is essential not just for his spiritual health, but also for his mental well-being. He explains that after being constantly around people and engaging in public ministry, he needs those quiet moments to reset. “If I’m going to be touring, if I’m going to be around people a whole lot… what did Jesus do? He got away often,” he noted.
With a busy touring schedule and the demands of being a father, Brandon has learned the value of solitude. He stresses the importance of getting away from the hustle and distractions of daily life to make room for God’s voice. “Jesus got away often, and so I’m trying to make that a priority in my life—getting away often to recharge, to hear the voice of the Lord, and stay in a healthy place,” Brandon continued.
Worship isn’t always loud or energetic.
His intentionality in creating space for God, away from the noise of the world, is a reminder that worship doesn’t always have to be loud or energetic. Sometimes, the most impactful worship happens in solitude, when you can reflect, recharge, and realign with God.
It’s easy to assume that worship leaders, especially those with a platform like Brandon’s, are constantly living in a state of worship. But for Brandon, worship is something that happens not just on stage but in private, mundane moments of life. “When I really want to connect with God… it’s usually in the quiet,” he reiterated.
“It’s wild at my house… it’s hard to have that quiet time, even first thing in the morning.” But Brandon reminds us that worship doesn’t have to look a certain way. It’s about finding what works in your season of life.
For Brandon, that means creating personal moments of worship. His home in the countryside provides the perfect setting for reflection and solitude. “We have a house in the country on a few acres, and not only did I need that for my relationship with God, but also for my mental health,” he said.
Brandon encourages you to find those personal, quiet moments with God in your own life—whether that’s during a morning drive, a walk in nature, or simply sitting in silence. “Whatever brings you joy and gets the voices of the world away… that’s worship,” he shared.
Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed by the busyness of life or just craving a deeper connection with God, create intentional space for solitude and stillness, and you may find that God speaks to you most clearly when the world around you is quiet.
