In the Closet with God

Rest, Renewal and Getting Real with Him

Some days, hiding doesn’t feel optional—it feels like survival. Becky Thompson knows that feeling. She talked to Family Life Radio Morning Show about it.

She wrote about that moment in chapter three of her book, “When You Just Wanna Hide.” It’s not a metaphor. It’s a real closet in her home—a real storm shelter.

“It starts out with this story. I’m in the back of a closet sitting in the dark. And the worst part is that my husband wasn’t shocked to find me there. Like… he didn’t walk past the closet and say, right, ‘Whoa, what’s happening?’ He was like, ‘Whoa, okay, I’m gonna turn around and walk back out. ’Cause if she’s in there, she needs a minute.’”

“For me, I have gone to a specific place in my home. So when I feel like hiding, if I can go to that place—in Northwest Oklahoma, my closet is also my storm shelter. It’s an above ground cement room. So it’s very quiet in there.”

What happens in that room? Sometimes breakthrough. Sometimes just tears.

“Sometimes He’s really clear in His answers, and sometimes it’s just me crying in the dark, and He’s just like, ‘I’m here.’ And that’s it. That’s all you get today. You just get my presence.”

And His presence is enough.

What Becky invites us into is a powerful reframing of what it means to “hide.” It’s not weakness. It’s not disconnection. It’s sacred.

“I think one of the most important things women, moms especially, can learn how to do… is to hide well. And we hide well when we hide in the Lord and not from the Lord.”

In a world that pressures us to keep it all together, Becky gently gives us permission to stop pretending. To bring everything to Jesus—not for answers, but for presence.

“I love giving women permission to say, ‘This is where I really am. This is what I’m really going through. So Lord, I just need you to meet me here without any to-dos attached to it.’”

You don’t have to be okay. You just have to be honest. And God will meet you—even in the back of a closet.
