Look Doubt in the Eye
Finding God with Josh Baldwin
Worship leader and songwriter Josh Baldwin is no stranger to struggles. In a candid conversation with us, Josh shared how he navigated his feelings of being distant from God and offers valuable insights on how we can tune our hearts to listen for God’s voice, even when doubt clouds the way.
As Christians, one of the most profound challenges we face is discerning and hearing God’s voice. Whether in moments of joy or during seasons of doubt, learning to listen to God requires faith, patience, and sometimes navigating through silence.
Josh describes how, at times, he found himself navigating periods of silence and uncertainty, even while being actively involved in ministry. He admits that it wasn’t always about facing life’s big crises; sometimes, the hardest struggle is simply the everyday silence, where God felt far away, and the direction forward seemed unclear. “I didn’t know what God was doing…but I knew I couldn’t quit. I had to just keep going,” Josh reflected.
Even when we can’t seem to hear God’s voice clearly, we can trust God is still working in our lives.
In those seasons, doubt doesn’t necessarily come from a lack of faith but from the tension between expectation and reality. Josh says, “I would ask myself, ‘Where is God in this? Shouldn’t I feel more connected?’” It was during these everyday moments, where no major events were occurring, that Josh realized faith wasn’t just about feeling God’s presence—it was about trusting Him, even when His voice felt silent.
We all go through periods where God feels distant, but in these moments have the opportunity to learn the most about ourselves and our faith. We don’t always need clear answers or dramatic signs to know that God is working; sometimes, we just need to keep moving forward, trusting that He is present, even in the silence.
God often speaks in ways we don’t anticipate, and listening means being open to what He brings our way, even if it wasn’t part of our plan.
How to Hear God in Everyday Moments
One of the misconceptions many people have is that God only speaks during big, life-altering events. But Josh has discovered that God’s voice often comes in the everyday moments—if we’re willing to listen.
Josh shares how prayer, Scripture, and quiet reflection are some of the key ways he stays attuned to God’s voice in his daily life. “I’ve learned that you can’t always expect God to give you the next step when you’re in a rush,” he noted. Sometimes, hearing God means slowing down and tuning into the seemingly ordinary moments of life.
By being open to opportunities—even those that aren’t initially for him—Josh has found that God often speaks and works through unexpected avenues.
Hearing God in the Midst of Doubt
Josh’s openness to God’s unexpected inspiration has shaped his ministry and music in profound ways. He’s found that when he remains humble and willing to be led by the Holy Spirit, God brings new ideas and paths that he never anticipated.
“The Lord just started watering these dreams over here,” Josh shared, reflecting on how God brought fruit from areas of his life where he wasn’t even looking. Staying open to God’s leading, even when it doesn’t fit our expectations, is key to hearing His voice.
You can look doubt in the eye if you stay determined to believe God is always at work, guiding you.
Josh Baldwin’s journey of learning to hear God’s voice is a powerful example of how we can stay faithful, even in seasons of doubt and uncertainty. His story reminds us that God’s silence doesn’t mean absence, and His voice is often found in the quiet moments of everyday life.
For those of us struggling to hear from God, Josh offers hope and encouragement: stay faithful, stay humble, and keep listening. God is speaking—sometimes we just need to slow down and tune in.
