Overwhelmed by Life’s Questions?

Experience Comfort with Christ’s Presence

Doubt often lurks in the shadows, ready to challenge the very foundation of our faith. Even those who stand on stages, leading worship and spreading the message of God’s love, have faced moments of uncertainty. Take Leeland Mooring, lead singer of the Texas-based band LEELAND, for example. He courageously opened up about a period in his life when doubt cast a long shadow over his faith in this conversation with Family Life Radio.

Leeland shared about a season in his live in 2017 to 2018 leading up to about the time he lost his voice. “It was about a year long period where I had a lot of questions in my heart about God, His nature, and specifically reconciling the loving nature of God – that God is love with the existence of moral evil in the world and natural evil in the world – and [asking] how can a God of love allow all of these terrible things to happen to people?” Leeland shared. It’s a struggle that many of us can relate to.

He continued, “I knew that the doctrine of sin of those things entering into the world, but I still was having a really tough time. Essentially, a year went by. It’s not that I wouldn’t pray, but it was like every time I would pray, these questions would come up again, like hard passages in the Old Testament that I couldn’t understand.”

Seeking Answers

Leeland didn’t pretend to have all the answers or hide behind a facade of unwavering faith. Instead, he searched deeply into his doubts, seeking understanding wherever he could find it. “I read everything I could from really smart atheists, agnostics, and then really everything I could from Christian philosophers,” he explained.

But amidst the uncertainty, Leeland found comfort in the core message of the gospel. “The center of the gospel is the Son of God being born into the world and submitting himself to human suffering and pain,” he reflected.

God is not distant or indifferent to our pain.

He willingly entered into it, sharing in our humanity so that we might be adopted into His family.

Embracing Mystery

“There’s no way I’m going to ever have all the answers to hard questions like that,” he admitted. And yet, he didn’t let that uncertainty shake his faith. Instead, he leaned into it, trusting in the wisdom and sovereignty of God even when the path ahead seemed unclear.

“I could sense God was patient with me, but I still had these questions, and I was bringing them to Him as much as I could, but I could tell also those questions were a bit of a hindrance too, in my in my relationship with Him,” he continued.

“It’s tough to have intimacy with somebody that you’re taking to court in your mind all day,” Leeland observed.

Guided by Faith, Not by Sight

In the end, faith isn’t about having all the answers or never experiencing doubt. It’s about trusting in the One who holds all the answers, even when we can’t see the way forward.

  • Be honest about your struggles.
  • Bring them to God with open hands and a willing heart.
  • And above all, trust in the goodness and faithfulness of God, even when the answers seem elusive.

Take courage today and keep pressing on in your faith journey. The road may be rocky at times, but remember, you’re never alone, and the One who walks beside you is faithful to see you through your darkest valley to bring you into His glorious light.
