My high school son informs me today that a kid with autism went up to him and tried to make friends today. He claims he tried to be nice, told the kid he could sit down with them at lunch but that the kid "wouldn't stop talking". My son is kind of quiet and hasn't had great experiences after their elementary school tried to force students to include kids with differences no matter how disruptive they may be. Now, my son just doesn't want to be friends with this young man from today and it breaks my heart. I have always taught my kids to be kind and that you don't have to be best friends with someone you don't truly like but you have to be kind and civil. I can only imagine what that boy's life is like (trying to make friends in high school). The whole thing is very upsetting to me because I don't know if my son will be as compassionate as I want him to be. My son has never had to try hard to make friends. He has tried to be nice at least to people he didn't want as friends. I tell my son to put himself in that boy's shoes and I try to get through to him. I know my son won't insult the kid or put him down but he probably won't befriend him either. Please pray that God speaks to my son's heart and shows him the right way.
