Rest Is More Than a Nap

Becky Thompson Gets Real About Soul Care

You’ve bought the planner.

You scheduled the quiet time.

You blocked off “me time.”

And still—you feel like you’re barely hanging on.

Sound familiar?

Becky Thompson gets it. During her recent conversation with Family Life Radio’s Morning Show, Becky shared a moment so many of us know too well: believing a new planner could somehow fix the chaos.

“I wish I could tell you that I had found a great planner and I know that there are incredible planners created just for people like me that need to hold something in their hands and organize their day.”

But beyond the curated backdrop of her Zoom call—complete with a cute chair and fresh makeup—life was still messy. “Behind me looks great… The other side, I don’t know what was in this bowl. I think it was grapes a few days ago. It’s hard, whatever it is. It’s crunchy.”

Like many women, Becky tried to bring order to the mess. Tried to find peace through structure. But it didn’t work.

“I always think if I just had the right tool then I could unclutter… For me, it’s futile.”

She’s not dismissing planning—just naming what many of us feel but hesitate to say. Even when we get everything “under control,” we’re still exhausted. “We can order those planners in October… We can finish all the way in December and things can be good. But if that calendar is what you feel like keeps you and it’s not this rest that we can get all the way down to our souls, we’ll always be exhausted, we’ll always be running, we’ll always be rushing.”

This is what Becky calls healing rest—a soul-deep peace that schedules can’t manufacture. “I can do all these practices that I think will bring me peace, but if my heart isn’t settled and anchored in the rest that Jesus offers, then there’s no amount of time I can put onto that calendar. There’s no amount of checked off to-dos that are gonna bring me that comfort that the presence of Jesus can.”

So if your calendar is full but your spirit is still tired—pause.

Don’t pause to plan better. But to receive what can’t be organized or optimized.

Let Jesus give your soul the rest it really needs.
