The Power of Routine
Danny Gokey shares Anchors for Strengthening Faith
It’s not uncommon to find ourselves searching for anchors – those practices and truths that keep us grounded in our faith. Danny Gokey, a name synonymous with soul-stirring contemporary Christian music, recently shared his journey and insights in an interview with Family Life Radio. His experiences, marked by both challenges and triumphs, offer valuable lessons for anyone navigating the waters of faith.
It’s clear that Danny has experienced a significant shift in his life, embracing routines that he once found challenging.
The Power of Routine
Imagine starting your day not in a rush, but in a moment of peace and reflection. Danny Gokey puts it simply, “I make coffee or tea and then read my word.” This routine, seemingly mundane, creates a space for God in the everyday. Danny admits he’s not perfect at it – “Am I faithful to it every morning? No, but I’ve been pretty good at it.” His honesty is refreshing. He finds it’s not about perfection; it’s about persistence.
Incorporating journaling into this routine adds another layer of depth. It’s a practice that allows you to pour out your thoughts, fears and dreams before God, creating a tangible record of your spiritual journey. Remember, “The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning” (Lamentations 3:22-23 ESV). Your morning routine can be a daily reminder of this enduring truth.
Physical Discipline as a Pathway to Spiritual Growth
Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, and caring for it can be an act of worship. Danny’s approach to physical health – “The way I eat, the way I exercise” – is not just about staying fit. It’s about honoring God with your body.
This discipline in the physical realm can have profound implications for your spiritual life. “This gym routine is helping … the structure really makes a difference,” Danny notes.
When you care for your body, you’re better equipped to serve, to pray and to engage with the world around you.
Finding Peace in Life’s Storms
In a world that often feels chaotic, finding peace can seem like a daunting task. Danny’s perspective is anchored in his faith: “Peace is part of the promise in the inheritance we have in Christ.” But how do you lay hold of this peace? It requires an active faith, one that reaches out to grasp God’s promises. “Faith is literally taking it’s lay a hold of something and receiving, like reaching out towards and grabbed the promises of God.”
Despite losing most of his income during the COVID-19 pandemic, Danny chose to trust God. “I know your character, God. I’ve been through this before. I spent years walking by faith living by faith. So, you know what? I know you’ve always come through.”
Danny continues, “I made that decision to trust God’s Word over what I felt and over what I saw, because faith is a full confidence in His authority.”
Faith Working through Love
“The Bible says faith works by love,” he reflects. This realization came to him in a time of global unrest. His initial reaction to the turmoil around him was to point fingers, but he soon realized that wasn’t the answer. “I am a mess without Jesus. You know, you’re a mess without Jesus.”
Humility can be powerful reminder that He is the answer.
It’s easy to see the faults in others, to want to correct and control. But true change begins within. Danny says, “There is nothing good inside of us. … As we start dealing with our own stuff, we’ll we’ll begin to fix this world.”
When you choose to deal with your own struggles and surrender them to Jesus, you become a conduit of His love and peace in the world.
