Want Deeper Moments with God?
Colton Dixon on Finding God in Every Season
Christian music artist, Colton Dixon talked to us about his spiritual journey, sharing moments of both distance and closeness with God. For many of us, balancing faith with the demands of everyday life can be a daunting task.
Even in our busiest seasons, God is always near. Reflecting on his time on American Idol, Colton recalled feeling overwhelmed by his hectic schedule. “You have to be really intentional, even just to get in your 15 minutes with Jesus in the morning,” he shared.
The intense pace of the show made it challenging to maintain a consistent spiritual routine, leading him to question his motives and God’s presence. “God, are you here right now in the middle of all of this? Am I doing this for me?” He asked.
Familiar moments of doubt often lead to deeper reflections and eventual reassurance.
Reassurance came for Colton from a Bible story. “I was reminded of God telling Moses, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you,'” he said.
Reassurance in Scripture
Scripture can speak directly to our current situations. Realizing just that, Colton began to navigate the whirlwind experience of American Idol with the truth that God was always with him.
So much more than music and competition, Colton’s experience on American Idol and the reassurance that God gave to Moses became a personal message for Colton. “The Bible is alive,” he said. “What I think people mean when they say that is that you can be reading the same passage of Scripture your entire life, but you can be in a specific season. And in that moment, like God wasn’t talking to Moses, He was talking to me.”
A Deeper Connection Through Fatherhood
Colton shared how the birth of his twins affected him. Despite complications, including one of the twins being born without a pulse, Colton felt a powerful connection to God. “I just remember looking at them after all the chaos and thinking, there’s nothing I wouldn’t do for these little girls.” (01:13:43 – 01:14:08)
The girls birth became a spiritual awakening. “There was actually a complication with one of our girls. We had to switch to a C-section, and the first one out was little Dior. Their names are Dior and Athens. We’re millennials, so we went for it,” he said with a chuckle. But the joy quickly turned to fear when Dior was born not breathing and without a pulse. “We really had to take God at His word there,” Colton recalled.
As he looked at his daughters, he felt an overwhelming sense of love and protection. He felt a tug from God, reminding him, “I feel the same way about you.” And it brought him to tears, expanding his understanding of God’s love. “It was so much deeper than even that. It’s like, I feel like my relationship with God deepened in that moment,” he said.
Intentional Living and Spiritual Habits
Colton emphasized the importance of intentional living, inspired by his wife’s “hour of power” routine, which includes workout time, reading time, and Jesus time. “How different would your week look if you spent 15 minutes every morning with Jesus?” he challenged. These small, consistent habits can significantly impact our spiritual growth over time.
Colton shared that his wife’s dedication to her morning routine has been a source of inspiration for him. “My wife is actually amazing at this.” She divides this hour into segments: 20 minutes for working out, 20 minutes for reading, and 20 minutes for spending time with Jesus. Her routine, inspired by successful Christian authors like Terri Savelle Foy and Craig Groeschel, has helped her maintain a balanced and intentional life.”
This intentional approach to life, focusing on spiritual growth and personal development, profoundly impact Colton and his wife.
Invest in Your Connection
For those struggling to find time for God, Colton’s advice is simple yet profound: start small and be consistent. “It really will improve and deepen your relationship,” he encouraged. By making these small investments in our spiritual lives, we can experience significant growth and a closer connection with God.
God is always with us. Whether through Scripture, the trials of life, or the joys of parenthood, God’s presence is a constant source of comfort and strength.
