Being a Fixer Upper

And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.
— 2 Corinthians 3:18

HGTV stars Chip and Joanna Gaines have made a name for themselves transforming forgotten houses into stunning homes. Before these remodeling experts knock out walls, redo wiring, gut outdated storage or add the perfect final touches, they show prospective buyers a computer generated plan. If the buyers approve, they agree to provide the money and—sometimes—the elbow grease for the demo. But even the savviest buyers gasp when Chip and Joanna finally reveal the finished product. Why? Because in the hands of these masters, the property’s value and beauty far exceeds what they could have imagined.

Ever feel like you’re beyond fixing up? Did you know there’s a Master Designer who does makeovers on the condemned shells of our hearts? All Jesus requires is our participation in the demolition.

First, He asks that we swing a sledge hammer of unconditional love at our stubborn walls of bitterness and hatred. Next, our old way of thinking must be completely ripped out if we’re to be free of short tempers and faulty assumptions. Rewiring requires hours of study and prayer. Last, we must clear closets crammed full of secrets.

Once the demolition is underway, the Lord steps in and begins reconstruction. Patience begins to douse flames of anger. Compassion trumps judgment. Forgiveness replaces shame and failures.

While we remain works-in-progress as long as we’re living, we can get a glimpse of how our transformation is coming along every time we look into the eyes of the Master Designer. But the finished product is a surprise He’s saving for the final reveal . . . and it will leave us speechless.

Today’s One Thing

Choose a corner of your heart to begin your remodel. If you struggle with bitterness, let it go. If you experience envy, count your blessings. If you’ve been holding onto a secret shame, confess. Sweep it clear because the Master Designer is on His way.
