From Rock Bottom to Redemption

Ben Fuller’s Inspirational Journey

Raised in a non-Christian environment, Christian musician and singer-songwriter, Ben Fuller struggled with drug and alcohol addiction before experiencing a life-changing encounter with God. His music often reflects his journey from darkness to light, and he shared some glimpses of his story with us.

When we asked whether Ben would prefer a rewind button or a pause button in life, he exclaimed, “My mind operates like a movie, and I just saw whatever movie it was where you could just hit pause and everything freezes, and you can just kind of move yourself through and examine a moment.”

Hitting Pause

For Ben, he feels like pausing allows him to fully appreciate the journey he has been on and how the Lord brought him through it, particularly his past, which includes 14.5 years as a drug addict.

Ben’s candid discussion of his addiction reveals the depths of his struggles. ” I feel like there was never quite a bottom…. There was a moment where I was overdosing on cocaine, and I remember earnestly praying to God, ‘Save my life, please. I don’t want to die.’” He describes this period as “just on low cruise control,” a prolonged state of despair where he felt utterly lost.

“I realized that Jesus was a man—and not just a swear word.”

The pivotal moment in Ben’s transformation came when he was invited to Church of the City in Franklin, Tennessee, in the fall of 2019. Walking into the church, he experienced Christian music and heard the gospel for the first time. “I realized that Jesus was a man—and not just a swear word—because that’s what He was to me growing up in a place that was 2% Christian.”

True Freedom

Ben recounts, “In that moment, realizing that I have never been higher and…I was like, ‘how can this be free?’ I’d love to think that if somebody caught a photo of me standing in that aisle, seeing everybody’s hands up, praising the Lord, my feet would have been off the ground because I felt that high.”

Following his incredible encounter with God, Ben experienced radical changes in his life. “I was drinking 15 beers a night, and all of a sudden, over the next few weeks, next couple of months, I [no longer liked] the taste of alcohol. I [knew I] should also stop swearing because I was feeling convicted of the F-word.”

These immediate changes left Ben and those around him in awe. He describes this transformation as both “scary” and “amazing.”

And despite the drastic change, Ben faced skepticism from friends and family. Many thought it was just a phase, “Oh, Ben’s just doing this Jesus thing for a little bit” (03:33:12 – 03:33:30). It took time for Ben to realize the permanence of his transformation and for others to see it as genuine. Today Ben’s story is a powerful testament to the lasting impact of faith. “My prayer is that the Lord uses my story, uses my testimony as His truth.”

No matter how deep someone’s struggles, hope and redemption are available through Jesus Christ.
