How the Words We Speak Shape Our Souls
Jason Gray on Healing Through Language
Jason Gray spoke to us about the power of language—how the words we speak, particularly to ourselves, can either heal or harm our souls.
Christian singer-songwriter, Jason Gray, explores the intersection of faith, healing, and personal growth through his music. His songs, known for their honesty and vulnerability, offer insights into the spiritual and emotional challenges that many of us face.
The Impact of Language on Healing
Jason’s reflections on language began with a conversation he had with a mentor during a particularly difficult period in his life. His mentor offered a piece of advice that would impact him significantly: “He said, ‘Oh, I can’t help you heal. That’s above my pay grade, you know? But what I can do is I can help heal your language.’”
In this aha moment for Jason, he realized that while he couldn’t control all aspects of his healing process, he could control the words he used, both in conversation with others and in his internal dialogue.
“If your language gets healed and healthy, then between you and the Holy Spirit, you’ll heal yourself.”
Yes, Talk to Yourself
Like many of us, Jason had developed certain patterns of self-talk that were more harmful than helpful. His mentor guided him to recognize and shift these patterns. “He had me remove the word ‘should’ from my vocabulary,” Jason explained. “‘I should feel this. I should think that,’ because that cuts you off from how you actually feel.”
As he began to remove “should” from his internal dialogue, Jason found he connected better with his true emotions and thoughts, rather than forcing himself to conform to external expectations.
The words we use feed our reality.
Another significant change was the shift from saying, “I’m figuring things out” to “I’m finding things out.” This subtle change in language made a big difference in how Jason approached his challenges. “I want you to say, ‘I’m finding things out,’ and that moves you out of the analytical into the discovery mode.” By focusing on discovery rather than analysis, Jason was able to approach his problems with a sense of curiosity and openness, rather than stress and pressure.
Language as Fuel for Spiritual Growth
The words we use feed our reality—they influence our thoughts, our emotions, and ultimately, our actions. By choosing words that promote healing and positivity, we can create an environment in which spiritual growth is not only possible but highly likely.
Jason began to apply this principle in his self-talk and songwriting. He became more intentional about the language he used in his lyrics, seeking to write songs that would move and inspire others. “I just began to pay attention to times when a handful of words would change things…so a lot of my songs now are an attempt to bring health and healing to our language.”
A Lasting Change
By becoming more mindful of the words he uses, both in his internal dialogue and in his interactions with others, Jason has experienced a deeper level of healing and growth. His story speaks to the power of language and reminds us that the words we speak—whether out loud or in our minds—carry significant weight.
By healing our language, we can create a foundation for deeper emotional and spiritual health. Whether it’s in the songs we sing, the conversations we have, or the thoughts we entertain, let us be mindful of our words, knowing that they have the power to heal—or harm—our souls.
