Pausing for Grace
CAIN’s Reflections on Life’s Busy Seasons
If you had the power to rewind or pause your life, which would you choose? It’s an interesting question that often reveals deeper truths about faith and how we navigate life’s ups and downs. The sibling trio CAIN—Madison Cain Johnson, Taylor Cain Matz, and Logan Cain—talked to us about how this choice reflects their journey through life, family, and faith.
This conversation is full of humor, honesty, and wisdom, making it a reflection of the struggles and joys we all face as Christians trying to live in the moment. We hope their answers inspire you to pause, reflect, and trust God’s timing.
When asked whether she would prefer a rewind or a pause button, Taylor was quick to reply: “Oh, man. Speaking of today, I would choose rewind. Rewind, yeah. Like rewind and redo.” Her first instinct was to go back and change things, to fix mistakes—something many of us can relate to.
How often do you wish you could take back a word or action? We all have those moments where we wish things had gone differently. She shared, “There are some things that just kind of fly out of my mouth, and I’m like, ‘man, if I would have just taken another second.’”
It’s a familiar pain point for many Christians—the desire to control the outcome of our lives. Regret can be a heavy burden, but Taylor’s story offers hope. “I went to therapy to learn how to let whatever happened, happen and trust that the people in your life will love you enough through it.”
When we make mistakes, it’s easy to feel isolated or fear how others will react. Taylor’s journey to learn to let go of those moments and trust that God and her loved ones will extend grace encourages all of us who struggle to let go of regret.
While Taylor leaned toward rewinding, Logan took a different approach. Without hesitation, he said, “I’m going to pause.” For Logan, pausing is all about slowing down and truly experiencing life—especially as a father. He reflected on how the rapid changes in his 15-month-old daughter’s development have made him realize the value of being present, “The difference between a 14-month-old and a 15-month-old is way more dramatic than a 14-year-old and a 15-year-old… If I don’t stop and pay attention, I’ll miss it.”
His desire to pause isn’t just about parenting. “The pause to even just take more inventory, I guess, and just be like, ‘alright,, good, bad, indifferent, where we at?’ you know? Enjoying that.”
We often need reminders to stop and look at what God is doing right now.
Pausing gives us the space to appreciate the small but significant moments we might otherwise miss. If you feel like life is a blur, we hope this blog serves as a gentle nudge to slow down and savor the present before it slips away.
Contentment in God’s Timing
Taylor’s choice of rewind and Logan’s choice of pause sparked a deeper conversation about faith and control. Taylor admitted that while she initially leaned toward rewind, she recognized that “pause is the Christian answer.” Why? For her, pausing allows us to appreciate the present, to reflect and be content with what God has given us. On the other hand, for her, rewind is about control—something many of us struggle with.
Taylor candidly admitted, “The rewind is the control freak in me that we have to work out. We don’t want to rewind. We have to baptize that.”
We all can feel tension between wanting to fix the past and learning to trust in God’s timing.
The desire to rewind is often born out of fear—fear of mistakes, missed opportunities, or saying the wrong thing. But Taylor’s honesty reveals that letting go of control and trusting in God’s grace is a critical part of spiritual growth.
Living Fully in God’s Grace
As the conversation continued, Logan lightened the mood with his humor, telling Taylor she “picked the wrong answer” by choosing rewind. But humor aside, both Taylor and Logan’s responses offer practical wisdom.
Logan’s focus on pausing calls us to slow down and take stock of where we are—spiritually, emotionally, and relationally. Whether it’s noticing the changes in your child, appreciating a quiet moment with God, or simply being present with those you love, pausing can help you experience life more fully.
And at the same time, Taylor’s desire to rewind reveals a deep truth about grace. Even when we make mistakes, God’s grace covers it. Learning to trust that we are loved, even in our imperfections, breaks chains of bondage and offers us the opportunity to live fully in the freedom God offers to each of us.
So, which would you choose: rewind or pause? There is value in both perspectives. The best choice might be learning to pause more often. By doing so, you can avoid future regrets, live more intentionally, and embrace the grace God has for you in every moment.
Whether you’re in a season of busyness or reflection, we hope CAIN’s words offer a powerful reminder that God’s timing is always right.
