Labor Day through a Window in God’s Word

Labor Day can easily become another holiday to chill out and relax without a second thought to what it means. And even though you’re aware that our country sets the day apart to pay tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers, how often do you really do it?

And it is a good thing to receive wealth from God and the good health to enjoy it. To enjoy your work and accept your lot in life—this is indeed a gift from God.

─ Ecclesiastes 5:19 NLT

As followers of Christ, our perspective and view of things, even things like holidays, can and should be perceived through the window of God’s Word. Let’s look at just one perspective of what God says – seeing work as a gift from God.

Enjoy your job – it’s a gift from God.

Whatever you do, your Heavenly Father asks that you do it with all your heart for His glory because ultimately whomever you report to is not really the one you’re working for – your ultimate reward for your labor comes from God (Colossians 3:23-24). Every job has value and worth in God’s eyes.

  • Be willing to work where God has placed you (Philippians 2:13).
  • When you devote yourself to doing good work, you’ll experience a fulfilling life (Titus 3:14).
  • See your job as a way to worship God (Colossians 3:17).
  • Without God, your work is empty (Psalm 127:1).

This Labor Day, look at it a little differently – through this particular window of God’s Word.

Today’s One Thing

Take time today to give thanks to God for your job. Ask Him to forgive you if you’ve complained or had a bad attitude about your job. If you’re looking for work, begin to worship Him and spend more time in His Word as you trust Him to open new opportunities to you. Praise Him today for placing You exactly where He desires you to be – in a place where you can bring Him glory.
