Finding Stillness in God

What does it mean to be still? Do you come into the presence of your Heavenly Father with so much stuff in or on your hands that you cannot reach out to, or even hold on to your Heavenly Father?

Be still and know that I am God.

─ Psalm 46:10 NIV

James shared you are to “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you” (James 4:8-10 NASB).

Open your hands and heart and release all you are holding tightly to into the presence of your Father.

People noticed that when a certain leader of a national ministry, a godly individual, raised his hands seeking God’s blessing, his hands would be tightly closed. How can you receive God’s blessing when you’re holding on to other stuff too tightly?

Or perhaps we are so enfeebled and frail that we are incapable of lifting our hands for rescue—or for worship. When we are too weak to do anything, that is when He shows Himself to be strong.

So, what’s the application? The verse today has one purpose: to inspire you to know God. Don’t allow your circumstances to encumber you or sidetrack you. Rather, use them to propel you into His Presence and seek to truly experience Him. Open your hands and heart and release all you are holding tightly to into the presence of your Father.

Today’s One Thing

We usually feel like we have to be “doing something!” But the reality is you will find Him in the stillness. Consider your mood, your attitude, your thinking and the circumstances in which you may be in the midst of and then reach out to your Heavenly Father today.
