A Walk through Fire with David Frey

Giving thanks in the difficult and tragic season

Singer and songwriter, David Frey with Sidewalk Prophets has experienced a lot of devastation in his life. When Family Life Radio asked if he could, would he go back and change any of it, he said, “Selfishly, I probably would, but I’m glad I can’t because I wouldn’t have learned what I know now. I wouldn’t appreciate the sacrifices my wife has made. I probably would have taken all of it for granted.”

David attributes the walk through the fire as the one thing that brought him to the place he is in right now. Even though no one knows what their future holds, David finds the mystery of it all to be a beautiful thing.

“Our entire album, The Things that Got Us Here, is all about trying to find those things that have brought you [to where you are now. We hope] to encourage you to give thanks to God for those things because it’s the story He’s given you.”

To be thankful in the face of tragedy or something exceedingly difficult isn’t easy.

Your circumstances in life don’t make you who you are.

“That’s something I wrestle with,” David admits. “I’ve seen a lot of tragedy in my life, but I wouldn’t be who I am today without the struggle.”

David believes God always has a blessing in the tragedy or difficulties you encounter throughout your life’s journey. When you share your struggle with others and find that they are going through the same thing or something similar, you develop a kinship in the family of God. You recognize you’re going through it together and can often help each other.

David said, “I find myself wondering if I’m a good enough husband? Am I a good enough Dad? I think when you’re at your best as a dad, you still are wondering, Am I doing this right? Am I going to screw this kid up? And in the midst of that, you wonder, Can I provide for my family?”

You ask yourself, “Can I overcome all these things, and then you get you start going down this rabbit trail of, does anyone care?” and “Do I really deserve to be cared about?”

Help for Your Unbelief

In the middle of those horrible lies that that have been told to  you, you can find yourself doubting God or even become angry at Him for all of it. Have you ever wondered if He sees what you’re going through or just where He is in all of this?

David said, “Even at my strongest, my faith can be shattered in literally, a moment.”

David found his answer on how to deal with the lies he sometimes tells himself in Mark chapter 9. A man asked the disciples to drive out an evil spirit afflicting his son, but they couldn’t do it. An argument arose among the crowd, and Jesus asked what they were arguing about so the man told them. Then the father said to Jesus, “… if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us” (Mark 9:22 NIV).

To which Jesus replied, “If you can? Everything is possible for one who believes” (Mark 9:23 NIV).

“Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, ‘I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!’” (Mark 9:24 NIV). And Jesus removed the demon and return the man’s son to him.

“The lyrics to the song, ‘I Believe Now,’” David said, “is really just a prayer.” (Experience the song here.)

If you struggle with thoughts like David mentioned, know that they are lies from the enemy. Go to the Father today and ask Him to help you with any doubt you have about who you are in Christ and your ability to live the life He’s purposed for you.
