Trusting in God’s Guidance
How CAIN’s Faith Shapes Their Musical Journey
In a conversation with Family Life Radio, members of the Contemporary Christian trio CAIN discussed their experiences as a family of musical storytellers. Siblings Taylor, Madison and Logan Cain shared that one of their biggest challenges has been navigating the dynamics of working as a family. Logan mentioned that his biggest challenge was being willing to let go of his own ideas and being open to other people’s suggestions, while Madison talked about the difficulty of balancing individuality with the need to represent the family as a unit.
Logan shared, “Deferring to people or submitting something creatively and being willing to be voted down is really hard.”
Madison interjected, “We are so similar that sometimes when we’re not identical, we try to change each other a little bit … It’s a fine blend of, like, try not to control each other, but to make sure that you’re representing each other well.”
They also touched upon the importance of communicating effectively and setting boundaries. “It’s tough when you represent each other,” Madison admitted. “So if you speak publicly, you really do need to check in with the other two.”
Despite the challenges, the members of CAIN emphasized the importance of relying on their faith and trusting in God’s guidance to navigate their musical journey as a family.
As a Christian, one of the most important aspects of our faith journey is learning how to work together as a family, whether that’s with our immediate family or our brothers and sisters in Christ. Cain has learned to navigate those challenges and rely on their faith in God.
Madison smiled, “I remember one time where I kept explaining, and y’all were looking at me like, ‘We hear you and understand – we just disagree – and you’re voted down!’”
Logan added, “You become very defensive, and you start explaining, instead of being willing to just allow the other creative people to shape that into the best version. We’re all adults. Everyone’s allowed to live how they live, but then we have the extra added, difficult layer of ‘you bear our name as well.’ So that’s tricky.”
It’s one of the biggest challenges CAIN faces – navigating the dynamics of working together as a family. This is a challenge that many families face, whether in a business setting or in everyday life. It can be difficult to balance individuality with the need to represent the family as a unit, and to communicate effectively and set boundaries.
In the book of Romans, we are reminded of the importance of working together as one body in Christ: “For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another” (Romans 12:4-5 ESV). We are all unique individuals with our own perspectives and talents, but we are all part of the same body in Christ. We should learn to appreciate each other’s differences and work together for the greater good, just as the members of CAIN have learned to do.
Another challenge that CAIN faces is the difficulty of balancing personal relationships and professional responsibilities. Most of us face this too in our everyday lives, whether it’s with our family, friends or colleagues. It can be hard to find the right balance between work and personal life, and to make sure that we are not neglecting one for the other.
In the book of Ecclesiastes, we are reminded that there is a time for everything: “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance” (Ecclesiastes 3:1-4 ESV).
As Christ followers, it’s important to be mindful of our time and use it wisely, both in our personal lives and in our work. We should also remember to prioritize our relationships with God and with others and make time for those things that truly matter.
Finally, CAIN emphasizes the importance of relying on their faith and trusting in God’s guidance to navigate the ups and downs of their musical journey as a family. This is something that we should all strive to do in our own lives, whether in our personal or professional lives. It can be easy to get caught up in our own plans and goals, but we should always remember to turn to God for guidance and support.
In the book of Proverbs, we are reminded to trust in the Lord and lean not on our own understanding: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV)
Logan said, “I’m trying to teach myself and train myself to allow the first addition to be shaped into something better.” This applies both to creativity in his musical career and in being molded into the image of Christ.
