Keep On Knocking

Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.

— Matthew 7:7-8

“Ask, and it will be given to you.” Sounds simple enough. Maybe we need to dig a little deeper. After all, God is not the proprietor of a heavenly convenience store. He doesn’t hand out anything we desire whenever we want.

In Matthew 7, Jesus instructed the disciples—and us—how to draw the world closer so that they would listen to His message. But He also knew that there would be times of discouragement and failure, times when we would despair of ever becoming more like Him, much less encouraging others to do so.

So He reminded us to ask for help. When we ask for the things we need to grow in our walk with Him, He’ll provide. We should seek Him too: His grace, His wisdom and His presence. When we seek to truly know Him, we will.

When we stay close to Him, listening to Him through Scripture and prayer, we’ll receive all we need for our relationship with Him to flourish. And when it does, we won’t be discouraged by failure but buoyed by grace.
