Meditate

“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it.”

—Joshua 1:8

One of legendary Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne’s most clever moves  happened before a game against rival USC. Rockne knew his team couldn’t beat USC. So he recruited 75 of the biggest, meanest looking farm boys he could find, had uniforms made, and paraded them onto the field. The moment USC saw Notre Dame’s huge team, Rockne knew his ploy had worked. USC was too busy meditating on the size of the opposition to think about winning the game.

A similar distraction foiled the Israelites. Ten of the twelve spies sent to the Promise Land returned with reports of giants. Joshua and Caleb’s pleas to meditate upon God’s promises instead of obstacles were ignored. So obsessed over the opposition’s strength, they believed victory was impossible. Dwelling on the difficulties rather than the power cost them forty years in the wilderness.

What we focus on is what we empower.

According to Joshua 1:8, centering our attention on the promises of God has the ability to redirect our thoughts. Positive attitudes lead to positive actions. And positive choices can spare us years of wandering in difficult circumstances.

Today’s One Thing

Choose one thing that’s bugging you…social media, your bank balance, a fractured relationship…dwell on the power of the One who can really do something about it.
