The Greatest Rewards

“If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.”

─ 1 Corinthians 15:19

The decision to follow Christ comes at a cost, but at the same time it brings the greatest rewards. Those who chose to follow Jesus, even from His very first teachings, endured personal persecution, not just from their community but also from their own families.

Jesus’ disciples left their homes and jobs in response to His call to follow Him. Jesus reminded Peter that his commitment to a personal relationship with Him would require sacrifice, but it also held the greatest rewards in this life – and in the next (Luke 18:28-29). Those who chose to follow Him then, and even today, focus most importantly on the promise of eternal life.

Sometimes our families aren’t supportive in our decision to follow Christ. We may not have their approval, but we have the love and support of the family of God. And even when we do have the full support of our family, we may pay the cost in other relationships. When we feel like we’ve lost someone or something because of our faith, remember God is our source and our restorer. He’s promised to provide everything we need (Philippians 4:19).

We can refuse to dwell on what we’ve given up, and instead think about all we have gained. We have promises of blessing in this life and eternal rewards.

Consider the relationships you have because of Christ. Give God thanks for each person He’s brought into your life and the specific gift they are to you.
