A Healing Spring of Living Water

Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

─ John 4:13-14

James took a big drink from his water bottle and surveyed the gym floor where he worked out most mornings. Working out was relatively new to him – only three months into his gym membership. His friends presumed his new commitment came from a desire to lose weight, and he let them think that. He had shared his dark secret only with his friend, Leanna.

The gym offered him a place to fight and a way out of the looming depression he tried to hold at a distance for most of his life. For years, he pretended everything was alright. He hid the darkness from everyone, especially those in his church. While some would admit that Christians become depressed, he didn’t know of anyone who believed Christians could struggle with thoughts of suicide – but he did!

James tried to believe God could heal him from depression, but often doubted He could. He never completely lost faith in God, but he felt hopeless for liberation and recovery. Then he met Leanna, the new friend who seemed to know him better than himself. She saw right through his pretense and gently called him out, encouraging him to get professional help – for his body, mind and spirit.

At the recovery center, he discovered hope in Christ and how to drink in the healing spring of living water.
