A Deeper Life in Christ

To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

─ Colossians 1:27

Eli hadn’t planned to travel to southeast Texas where he’d grown up, but he felt a prompting in his heart to spend some time with his great-grandfather over the holidays. His mother said he’d been okay after another fall, although she admitted he spent much more time in his recliner than before he had fallen.

When Eli walked into the house, he found his favorite 89-year-old nestled in his chair. His eyes twinkled, and he smiled, his heart thrilled to have his eldest great-grandchild embrace him. The family had taken great strides to encourage Gramps to tell his stories, and he had some amazing ones. But the two of these men, with an age difference of more than 60 years, shared an unbreakable bond. Eli could get him to share stories with him that he seldom shared with anyone else.

And so it began. Eli inquired, and Gramps answered, and the hours of laughter and friendship transpired between them once again that afternoon. “Gramps, if you had the opportunity to give the world one piece of advice, what would it be?”

Gramps didn’t hesitate. “I’d encourage everyone to come to Jesus at the earliest point in their life possible. You know, I didn’t receive Christ until I was 45 years old. I wish I’d met him sooner and known Him longer. My relationship with Him is everything to me.”

Eli felt a twinge of conviction. His busy lifestyle left little time for a relationship with God. Although he knew Christ, Gramps’ words made him desire more.
