Defeat the Five Enemies of Change

I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.

─ Philippians 4:13

Henry Bergson, a Nineteenth century French philosopher said, “To exist is to change, to change is to mature, to mature is to go on creating oneself endlessly.” We have the power to do all things through Christ and that includes defeating the five enemies of change.

1. Excuses are the first enemy of change. We need to refuse to allow excuses to keep us from acting.
2. Discouragement tries to creep in as we seek change. An effective, successful person comes to understand that resistance to doing the right thing is to be expected. As we grow, everything around us will appear to change too.
3. Anxiety is always produced by looking backward or forward. The past is over, and only God knows what is going to happen tomorrow, so live for today.
4. Disruptions are caused by unexpected events in life. We should focus on the things we can control – our thoughts, attitudes and behaviors.
5. Waiting is the last enemy of change. Hard work is the price we must pay for success. If we’re willing to pay the price, the hard work will pay off. Trust God in the in-between times.

We need to refuse to allow the enemies of change to steal our dreams. Instead, we can press through by recognizing the enemies of change and focusing on God’s intentions for our life.
