Be More than Just Yourself

For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.

─ Hebrews 5:12-14

Mia and Kate offered their friend encouragement for her upcoming competition. “Just be yourself!” Kate told Sadie.

“No, please don’t ‘just be yourself!’” Mia countered. The other two girls looked at her inquisitively as she continued. “Sadie, you are intended for more than just who you are, because Christ lives in you. The more you know Him, the more you grow in faith, then the more you can become so much more than yourself in everything you do!”

The writer of Hebrews 5 has a similar message to the Christian Jews in his day – grow up in your faith and become more than just what moves beyond traditions of the past. They were encouraged to embrace their faith, grow up in Christ, embrace who they were in Him and teach others.

We become so much more through our ability to mature in faith by attaining a deeper knowledge of God. As we put His truths into practice and build on what we learn, our capacity to learn and become Christlike, also matures.

Today’s One Thing

Invite the Holy Spirit to help you grow in your understanding of who you are in Christ and then do those things that stretch your faith, so you become so much more than just yourself.
