Don’t Squirm Out of Your Problems

So let [perseverance] grow, and don’t try to squirm out of your problems. For when your patience is finally in full bloom, then you will be ready for anything, strong in character, full and complete.

─ James 1:4 TLB

When you first read James 1:4, it can be a difficult concept to swallow. It goes against our human nature not to stand up for ourselves, fight back and become offended. But James said, “When your life is overflowing with difficulties, when you’re floating in persecution, BE GLAD because a reward with your name on it is on the way.”

While James’ words are bold, he simply echoed Jesus’ words. Jesus said, “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you” (Matthew 5:10-12 NKJV).

Jesus knew that we can’t truly see our own character until we understand how we react under pressure. It’s much easier to follow Christ when things are going our way, but when others treat us unfairly, that’s when our true commitment to pleasing Christ is revealed.

Knowing that God promised to be with you in difficult times helps to adjust your perspective. Instead of complaining about our struggles, look at them as opportunities for spiritual growth.

Today’s One Thing

Besides asking God to help you navigate your problems, also pray for His strength to endure them. And as hard as it is to be patient, embrace the process, knowing God will not leave you alone through this journey. With His help, He will always bring you through.
