God Speaks Your Language

“Go out and stand before me on top of the mountain,” the LORD said to him. Then the LORD passed by and sent a furious wind that split the hills and shattered the rocks—but the LORD was not in the wind. The wind stopped blowing, and then there was an earthquake—but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was a fire—but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the soft whisper of a voice.”

Have you ever adjusted your language to fit your relationship with someone? Perhaps you didn’t even realize you tuned your words to fit the kind of connection you have, or desire to have with a person. A candidate for employment speaks very differently to a hiring manager, then to their sibling.

God frequently spoke to Elijah, His prophet. Sometimes the words God asked Elijah to say were difficult. King Ahab considered Elijah his enemy because of the very words he spoke for God. In 1 Kings 19, Elijah is running for his life. He wanted to hear from God – not as a prophet, but as God’s servant and friend.

God’s language changed when he spoke to Elijah. It was not the same tone He used when He corrected the wayward Hebrews. Our verse today says that Elijah went out and stood before the Lord. As the Lord passed before him, a furious wind split the hills and shattered rocks; the earth quaked and then there was fire. Yet, God was not in any of those things. But, after the fire, Elijah heard God in a soft gentle whisper.

God wants an intimate relationship with you.

Listen for God to speak to you in His own, unique way. Spend five minutes each day this week reading scripture and listening to hear God in whatever way He chooses to speak.
