Making Prayer Easy

“My heart has heard you say, ‘Come and talk with me.’ And my heart responds, ‘Lord, I am coming.’”

─ Psalm 27:8 NLT

Jesus’ disciples asked, “Lord, teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1). Jesus frequently modeled prayer for them, taking time away from ministry, getting alone with God. And yet, it seems they were looking for a formula to pray. Jesus gave them an example in what we call The Lord’s Prayer.

A common misconception is that God doesn’t hear us if we don’t follow certain prayer rules. That’s just a ploy from the enemy to keep you from relationship with God. God always hears our prayers (1 Peter 3:12).

Refuse to over-complicate it. Prayer is easy and is as individual as you are. There is no right or wrong way to pray. It’s about pursuing a relationship with God like you have a relationship with a close friend.

In our verse today, David said he heard God speak to his heart and ask him to come and talk to Him. That is a great picture of prayer. Moses argued with God (Exodus 3:11-14); Elijah complained to Him about feeling alone (1 Kings 19:10); and Mary answered with a spontaneous, honest praise (Luke 1:46). Each of those examples are prayers – conversations with God.
