Share Your Expectations

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.

─ Philippians 4:6 NKJV

“My relationship with my dad fractured long before my parents divorced. I’ve worked hard to try to repair that breach. It’s frustrating,” Nell confessed to her friend, Vicki. “I feel like I keep reaching out to him, but he’s not always there when I need him.”

“Have you shared your expectations with him?” Vicki asked. “Does he understand what you need?”

“I just need him to be a dad,” Nell replied.

“Well, maybe he doesn’t know what that means … for you,” Vicki said softly.

In our verse today, Paul encourages us to make our requests known to God. If we are told to share our expectations with God and tell Him what we desire of him, shouldn’t we also follow that direction in our personal relationships?

Share your expectations. You’ve probably played that video in your mind of the way you would like things to go. The challenge is no one else can see that scenario. You have to communicate it.

Today’s One Thing

Think about unmet expectations in a relationship. Set a time to talk to the person to share with them. Ask God to speak through you. Use positive words to communicate your hopes and dreams and give specific examples of how you see your exchanges.
