Choosing to Spend Your Time Well

For there is a proper time and procedure for every delight.

─ Ecclesiastes 8:6 NASB

Time – and how you use it – is vital to your success. How you use the time God gives you is important to Him, and Scripture reflects this. As the writer of Ecclesiastes, Solomon understood “there is a time for everything, and a season for every activity.” (Ecclesiastes 3:1)

  • A time to weep – and a time to laugh
  • A time to love – and a time to hate
  • A time to tear down – and a time to build
  • A time to be born – and a time to die

Our verse today reiterates Solomon’s message: life is filled with many things, each of which must have their own time that doesn’t take time away from something else just as necessary.

It’s easy to take time for leisure and entertainment. These activities feel good emotionally and have a payoff that is immediately apparent. Not as easy, though, is to make appropriate time for pursuits that may not feel as good but have a far greater payoff. Pursuits such as seeking God through:

  • Daily devotions
  • Prayer time
  • Attending church
  • Being quiet
  • Listening for His voice
  • Reading His Word

As you commit to do these things, you’ll not only discover it’s time well spent, but you’ll also find yourself more relaxed and at peace.

Today’s One Thing

How have you spent time so far in this year? Would you say your time has been well spent? If so, congratulations. If not, consider the ways in which you can spend your time pursuing God. Take time this week to do at least three of the suggested ways to seek God.
