Inspired Purpose

Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.”

─ John 4:34 ESV

Alan smiled as he locked the office door and turned to walk to his car. His friend, Carson, stopped him and asked, “Why are you smiling? You just spent an hour with me helping me navigate one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done in my life.”

Alan looked surprised and took a moment to respond. “Well,” he said, shifting the weight of his backpack from his hand to his shoulder. “I guess it gives me great fulfillment to do what I believe God put me on this earth to do. It feeds my soul when I feel like God’s using me to provide some inspiration, direction, hope or encouragement to others.”

One way we could rephrase Jesus’ words in our verse today is to say … I am fueled spiritually when I do what the Heavenly Father put me on the earth to do.

Jesus’ words should give us pause. Our spiritual nourishment not only comes from studying God’s Word, but with prayer and assembling with others of like faith for fellowship and worship. Spiritual food is what you ingest as well as what you give out or build in the lives of others.
