Eradicate the Negative Spiritual Germs

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

─ Colossians 3:16-17 ESV

In your lifetime, you’ve probably never been more aware of germs than you are now. In the last few months, you’ve washed your hands like never before. Across the globe we’ve held a vigilant watch over the Coronavirus.

What about spiritual contagions? Perhaps you’ve never thought about it this way, we have spiritual germs we should be wary of, as well as some contagious elements we should embrace.

Are you infected with negativity, jealousy, grumbling, or resentment?  Ask yourself:

  • Am I quick to complain or point out what seems to be an injustice?
  • Do I see others with a critical eye, overlooking their good and focusing on their weaknesses?
  • Do I gossip?
  • Do I paint things in a worst-case scenario?
  • Am I resentful when no one notices my efforts to help?

We all have nasty habits in our own humanity we must cleanse ourselves from. Wash our hands, so to speak, of sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire and idolatry (Colossians 3:5). Put away anger, wrath, malice, slander and obscene talk from our mouths (Colossians 3:8). Ugly attitudes can seep into our spirit and if not dealt with, cause us to become spiritually diseased, and then contagious.

Our verse today says to give the Word of God first place in your life. Let every activity of your life and every word from your lips be drenched with the beauty of our Lord Jesus. And bring your constant praise to God the Father because of what Christ has done for you! (TPT).

Eradicate the negative spiritual germs with the good medicine of the Word. As your heart and mind are absorbed with God’s character and nature, you will become filled with His love, hope, peace and joy, which are contagious too.

Today’s One Thing

Review the questions above honestly. If you think you are infected, get before God and humble your heart. Ask Him to help you put off the sins and embrace love, hope, peace and joy.
