Declutter Your Life for Contentment

But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world.

─ 1 Timothy 6:6-7 ESV

Godliness is a term used in Christian circles. It appears in the New Testament about 14 times depending on which translation you read. In its original, biblical context, the word conveys an attitude toward God that produces actions that are pleasing to Him.

There are many of us who can experience clutter, even in the good things that we are trying to do for Christ. We can strive to do all the intentional, right things in our lives and still find clutter in our lives.

The clutter may be good things, even  positive things, but somehow it becomes clutter. Paul, talking to Timothy in 1 Timothy 6:6-7 says: “Now godliness with contentment is great gain, where we brought nothing into this world and it is certain we can carry nothing out.” Note that Paul said that it’s not only godliness, but it’s godliness plus contentment that brings great gain.

Learning to be content with what we have, who we are and how God has made us, is our pursuit of living a godly life. Living a life of contentment within all the activities that we have is not easy for some of us.

Clutter is a threat to every area of your life. Here’s a list of some of the threats we face when we allow clutter in our lives.

  1. It’s a threat to our spiritual lives.
  2. Clutter is costly to your finances. Thousands of dollars could be saved in the average home in a year, if we were not cluttered with other things.
  3. Clutter can keep us from being our best in the workplace.
