Finding Joy in Someone Else’s Story

Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

A year before COVID-19 ever hit, Lizzy’s husband, Carson, lost his job and he hadn’t found another one. She watched as the list in his excel sheet filled up with the number of jobs he’d applied for – 100, 200, 300 different jobs. Oh, there had been interviews, hope and excitement and then nothing.

So, when her friend, Mary’s husband was also let go during COVID-19, she completely understood. Months passed and nothing still for either of the guys. Then, the really difficult news came. Mary’s husband had a new job, and the pay was even better than the one he’d lost … and they aren’t even Christians, Lizzy thought, as she read Mary’s text.

She didn’t know how to respond. She was angry, hurt and frustrated with God, and with herself. She never dreamed she would struggle to celebrate good news with a friend.

It can be difficult sometimes to find joy in someone’s story, especially if they receive something you want or need. Paul offers some help through our verse today when you find yourself in this situation. He said he experienced times of more than enough, and seasons when he went without. In both, he discovered the secret in how to be satisfied no matter his circumstance. The secret is that Christ alone is your strength. His explosive power is all you need to overcome every difficulty.

No matter what season you find yourself in today, when those you know share their story, you can celebrate because Christ is everything you need. Look to Him to help you find joy in your relationships.

Look at your relationships today. Who do you know that has something to celebrate in their life? Do one thing today that will let them know that you are rejoicing with them in this season of their life. Ask God to help you show them how genuine your joy is.
