Believe without Seeing!

Then [Jesus] said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and look at my hands. Put your hand into the wound in my side. Don’t be faithless any longer. Believe!” “My Lord and my God!” Thomas exclaimed. Then Jesus told him, “You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me.”

─ John 20:27-29 NLT

Believe without Seeing!

Jesus’ disciples were ordinary men who became extraordinary because of their relationship with the Lord. As they walked with Jesus, they learned about God and grew in their faith. Many times, they didn’t understand what Jesus was talking about or even where they were going as they followed him.

Thomas, one disciple known for his courage and doubt, is often referred to as “doubting Thomas.” When the other disciples shared with him that they had seen Jesus alive and well after his death and burial, Thomas said he would never believe it unless he could put his fingers into Jesus’ hands, where the nails had pierced them, and place his hand where the soldier’s sword had cut into Jesus’ side.

Jesus appeared again and invited Thomas to do just that in our verses above. And when Thomas did so, he exclaimed, “My Lord and my God!” to which Jesus replied, “You believe because you’ve seen me. Those who believe without seeing me are blessed because of their faith.”

Thomas and most of the other disciples became powerful witnesses to Jesus’ resurrection and ministry that reaches forward into time touching lives today with their accounts in Scripture.

As Christians, we follow Jesus because we believe in Him. We don’t always understand His plan, but we trust Him. Even when you experience serious doubt, Jesus will reach out to you to restore your faith, like He did for Thomas.
