A Prayer for Success

Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us;

yes, establish the work of our hands!

— Psalm 90:17

Few people have a list of accomplishments as long and significant as Moses. He spoke to God in a burning bush, went toe-to-toe with Pharaoh—and won. He led the Israelites through the Red Sea, spoke to God on a mountain and received the Ten Commandments, just to name a few. A moment’s reflection on this impressive list begs the question: How did he do it? No doubt, if Moses were alive today, he’d be in high demand as a leadership conference speaker.

But we know he had help. He couldn’t have done it without the Ten Plagues, parting the Red Sea, water from two rocks and regular deliveries of manna in the desert. And those were all God’s doing. Moses owed his success to God. And he knew it. His prayer not only asks God for help, but it also credits God with his success. This could have been a prayer Moses prayed every day!

And it’s a great prayer for us to pray every day. Not only do these words recognize our need for God’s help to be successful, they affirm God’s desire to help us. The Old and New Testaments are filled with reminders that God shows His favor to His children. No matter the work of our hands—caring for children, writing reports, closing sales, diagnosing illnesses or completing projects—God wants us to be successful in it. And we’ll do that best when we ask for His help.

Today’s One Thing

Pray Moses’ prayer over the start of your day, and ask God for His favor.
