A Special Place to Rest

For six years you shall sow your field, and for six years you shall prune your vineyard and gather in its fruits, but in the seventh year there shall be a Sabbath of solemn rest for the land, a Sabbath to the Lord. You shall not sow your field or prune your vineyard.

─ Leviticus 25:3-4

Jason hadn’t been back to his mother’s home in several years. As a college coach, his heavy recruiting, tournament and coaching schedules kept him over extended most of the time. So, when his mother had some unexpected health issues that required surgery, he took some time away and spent it with her.

Once his mother was released from the hospital and resting comfortably in her room, he made himself a hot cup of cocoa and headed toward his favorite spot in the house – the sun room. He settled into one of the comfy chairs, put his feet on the ottoman, leaned back and closed his eyes. The late morning sun felt great and he felt every muscle in his body finally relax.

The sunroom had always been a place of quiet rest for him. He saw his mother’s Bible sitting on the table next to him. He reached over and picked it up, careful to hold her place with his finger. As he opened it, his eyes fell on a verse in Hebrews his mother had highlighted in pink. “There is a special rest still waiting for the people of God.”

He prayed, quietly thanking God for reminding him that God always has a special rest awaiting him. He just needed to remember to step into it.
