Be His Temple with Hope Darst

Hope Darst, Christian worship leader, musician and songwriter, shared some questions with us that she recently asked God. She asked:

  • What priorities do I have that are wrong?
  • What do you want to rewrite or undo [in my life]?
  • What am I doing that maybe I thought was you, but isn’t you?

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.”

─ Matthew 7:24-25 ESV

In response to Hope’s questions, the Lord took her to the story of the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11). She couldn’t shake free from verse 4 that says, “Come, let’s build a great city for ourselves with a tower that reaches into the sky. This will make us famous and keep us from being scattered all over the world” (NLT).

“I felt like the Lord just said, ‘Hope, I have a lot of people building towers and not enough people being temples.’ The truth is, we’re called to be living temples that host the glory of God and hold the presence of God in everything we do to make His name great.”

If the Lord builds the house, no one can tear it down.

Hope continued, “If there’s things in my life that are towers, I want God to tear them down. I’m saying, God, you be the master builder. And if those are the things that remain, they stand firm, and no one can tear those things down.”

In her twenties, Hope’s house burned to the ground. She said, “In the natural, things can fall apart – marriages, careers, friendships –  but the house in your soul remains firm when it’s built on the Lord.”

Hope encouraged, “Not just as a worship leader, and not just as a song writer, but as a mom – and not to just my kids, but like a mom in the faith to another generation – please pay attention to how you’re building. Make sure that the Lord is building your house so that it can stand firm no matter what.”
