Bragging Rights

“Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.”

—Corinthians 10:17-18

We see them every time we open a social media website. Or on mantels and tables at our grandmothers’ homes. Delighted, smiling faces, hands holding trophies or diplomas. No matter what the achievement—big or small, professional or personal—it sometimes feels good to brag a little about it.

No matter how old, experienced, or mature we get, many people retain a touch of the “Look at me!” desires of a toddler. And there’s nothing wrong with that. Praise and admiration boost our self-confidence and spur creativity. They help push us to the next level. “I accomplished this, so now I can tackle that!”

What is vital, however, is that we always remember the one Source of all our talents and gifts, the One who helps us succeed. It is the power, love and faithfulness of the Lord that supports and lifts us up. It is the Lord who blesses our work and gives us the strength and ability to achieve it.

So share away about those beautiful quilts, work projects and awards. But let’s also remember to boast about the One who stands besides us as we work, providing the grace, talent and help to carry out our plans.
