Childlike Engagement

It’s beautiful to watch proud grandparents and their grandchildren play together. Whether it’s hide-and-seek, chase, checkers, peak-a-boo games or baking a batch of cookies — it’s the connection that matters. The simplest of things done together helps build relationships.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

– John 3:16 ESV

A trusting relationship is important to presenting the gospel to anyone, especially a child. When a young child asks about why God should be simple and uncomplicated.

When a child asks you to tell them more about God, here are some pointers you can use about the blessing of salvation:

  1. Share your personal testimony in the simplest terms, expressing why you accepted Christ as your Savior.
  2. Use Colors – YBRWG – Yellow, God is perfect; Black, people’s sin; Red, Christ’s blood; White – Christ washes people clean when they believe in Him; and Green, growing in Christ and God’s Word. You may have seen these used on a poster, bracelet or necklace.
  3. Explain God’s certainty that requires trust in the believer. While God is not seen, the evidence of things seen and not seen, such as grass, gravity and the air that surrounds them, and they enjoy the gift of the things He created.
  4. Don’t be strange. The imagery that could be used (blood, fire, death…) could scar a child or could draft an image that is not age appropriate. Trust the Holy Spirit to guide you.

Christ paid the price and gave believers the Holy Spirit to share the Good News.

The gospel is very simple: God loves everyone and has given you a living testimony for you to share with anyone. Go back to the basics and consider your testimony in the simplest terms.

Accepting Christ as your Savior is important for a child and adult. A simple method may also include the ABC method of admitting that you’re a sinner:
• Asking for forgiveness.
• Believing Jesus is the Son of God, and He paid the price for your sins.
• Confessing your faith in Jesus and committing to knowing and following Him.
