Do Not Harden Your Hearts

“Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.”

─ Hebrews 3:15 ESV

Lauren was grateful for the child learning center on site at her place of work, but her heart sank into the pit of her stomach each time she heard her name called across the campus paging system, asking her to come to the learning center. She knew by experience her five-year-old, strong-willed, independent son had done something again and required “parental guidance.”

Suddenly, the words from her study time in the Bible that morning came to mind as she walked toward the learning center – “Do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.” A hard heart, she knew, was useless in the master’s hand, unyielding to do the will of God.

Even if her son made wrong choices, her guidance and discipline would eventually cause his heart to soften and yield to what was right. Just as she coached and corrected her son in doing right, she appreciated how her own heavenly Father nudged her gently toward His will each time she chose to go her own way. Gently and lovingly, as each parent should, her heavenly Father helped her to understand His love and mercy.
