Get Up; Don’t Give Up

The godly may trip seven times, but they will get up again. But one disaster is enough to overthrow the wicked.

─ Proverbs 24:16 NLT

The fears of falling and failing are both learned. Children generally don’t have a fear of falling or failing, at least not until after they’ve experienced some pain.

Children learn to crawl, walk and run by trial and error. Someone may hold a toddler’s hands to help them keep their balance or stand behind them to catch them and soften the blow of falling, but eventually they walk by getting up and trying again and again.

Our verse today says, “The godly may trip seven times, but they will get up again. But one disaster is enough to overthrow the wicked.” Jewish scholars explain Proverbs 24:16: “Because a person falls but gets up again, they become righteous. If not for the fall, they would never ascend to great heights.”

We succeed as long as we continue to get up; refusing to give up on our pursuit of all God has for us. Another verse of Scripture that supports our commitment is Galatians 6:9: “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”

Today’s One Thing

Consider the falls or failures you’ve recently experienced. What have you learned? What do you need to adjust? Never give up but reach out to God to help you stay steady. Keep today’s Scripture before you this week. Get up; don’t give up, and hold on to God with faith, believing He will help you achieve all He has for you.
