Give Your Heart a Lift

“Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.”

—Psalm 42:11

Erin let the phone slide slowly from her ear as she pressed the disconnect button on her phone. Her heart sank with disappointment.

“Everything okay?” her friend, Jordan asked, joining her table with a tray of their fast food.

“That call was from the human resources department,” Erin said. “They called to tell me they chose another candidate. I really believed it was my job!”

Jordan saw the disbelief written on Erin’s face, but even more apparent was the disappointment in her heart. “I’m so sorry,” she said. “I know you really saw yourself in that position, and I know it’s hard to hear, but if you didn’t get it, then God has something better.”

Erin huffed in frustration at Jordan’s attempt to encourage her. “I hate when people say that ….” Her voice trailed off and her eyes filled with tears.

“Even if it’s the truth?” Jordan tried again. “How many times have you been disappointed when things didn’t go the way you expected, only to discover down the road, God really did have something better in mind for you?”

“Plenty of times, I guess,” Erin said, attempting a half smile. “I guess it’s time for me to count my blessings – literally.”
