Hold on to Good Conscience

This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their faith.

─ 1 Timothy 1:18-19 ESV

No doubt you’ve heard people say, “Trust your gut.” Or perhaps you’ve felt a tug inside that something wasn’t quite right. When you go against your belief system, it affects you. Likewise, you feel positive when you make decisions that follow your value system.

Your conscience is not an audience room for the voice of God or of the devil. God speaks to you through the Holy Spirit. Your conscience is an inner awareness that bears witness to the standards and beliefs we identify and apply.

Paul encouraged Timothy to hold on to faith and good conscience (1 Timothy 1:18.) You hold on to a good conscience by valuing your faith in Christ more than anything else and by doing what you know is right. When we deliberately and repeatedly ignore our conscience, our hearts begin to harden. Eventually our aptitude to tell right from wrong diminishes. That’s why Paul cautioned, “By rejecting this, (or ignoring our conscience) some have made shipwreck of their faith.”

Today’s One Thing
